American musician and hip-hop legend Calvin Broadus, famously known as Snoop Dogg, has announced that he quit smoking weed.
"I've decided to quit smoking after much thought and discussion with my family." Please keep my privacy in mind now," Snoop Dogg wrote on Instagram. "I'm quitting smoking," he said in the caption of the solemn black-and-white photo.
It's unclear whether the hip-hop artist's vow is genuine or part of an elaborate marketing push for his cannabis brand, Leafs By Snoop.
"This is probably just going to be some viral campaign where he launches his own line of vapes or edibles or something," one X (previously Twitter) user speculated.
Notably, smoking marijuana is Snoop Dogg's trademark, and many of his commercial activities and media appearances revolve around the drug.
Snoop Dogg's announcement comes just days after he and celebrity chef Martha Stewart created a line of 'Best Bud Bags' - designer clutches that include a lighter and a cannabis section.
Snoop's home state was the first to legalize marijuana for medical purposes. It was later legalized for recreational use in the state in 2016, following in the footsteps of Colorado and Washington, both of which did so in 2012.
Leaves By Snoop, which he launched in 2015 in Denver, Colorado, focuses on producing its cannabis strains, concentrates, flowers, and sweets.
Snoop has frequently smoked marijuana on stage during his live gigs and even on television.
Snoop Dogg rose to prominence after appearing on Dr. Dre's 1992 album, 'The Chronic,' which featured a marijuana leaf front and center on the cover. He then released his debut album 'Doggystyle' in 1993. He has released 19 albums since then.
