Timothy Kipchumba Toroitich, Marakwet West member of parliament, described to a  court in Nairobi how cartels stole Ksh 547,567 from his accounts.

Before his phone unexpectedly shut off, the MP claims he received a call from an unknown number.

According to the lawmaker, after restarting his phone, he got an SMS asking him if he had authorized transactions in his bank and mobile money accounts.

He told the court that he called the customer service departments of each bank immediately to let them know that money had been taken from his accounts without his consent.

He then gave the banks instructions to halt all transactions and filed a formal complaint at Parliament police station with reference number 16/13/04/2023.

The culprit, known as Boniface Kirui, was captured after the police referred the case to the DCI parliamentary unit.

Additionally, he disclosed to trial magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi that the banks had been able to snare Ksh 96,000 that had been returned to his accounts.

On July 6, the case will continue, and the prosecution plans to call 4 witnesses to the stand.
