Four police officers who were stationed at the Muthaiga Police Station, where murder suspect Kelvin Kinyanjui Kang'ethe escaped from custody, have been relieved of their duties.
Nairobi Police Commissioner Adamson Bungei said that two extra officers monitoring the four officers in issue have been reassigned to different duty stations as part of disciplinary proceedings within the police force.
He also revealed that Kang'ethe's lawyer, John Ndegwa Maina, is still in police detention. Maina was apprehended at Muthaiga Police Station shortly after Kang'ethe fled at around 5.30 p.m. on February 7.
Maina reportedly visited Kang'ethe four times as his advocate before his escape.
Kang'ethe is suspected of killing a 31-year-old Kenyan-born lady from Whitman, Massachusetts, whose body was recovered inside a vehicle at Boston's Logan Airport in November of last year.
Following his detention in Nairobi, Kang'ethe was brought before the court on a miscellaneous application, and investigators were given 30 days to keep him awaiting the completion of investigations.
While holding him at Muthaiga police station, the court noted that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) plea regarding the nature of the offense was not objectionable.
According to authorities, the suspect and the dead were both Massachusetts residents who were allegedly in a relationship.
Preliminary findings show that Kang'ethe viciously attacked and repeatedly stabbed the woman in the face and neck, causing catastrophic injuries that ultimately led to her death.
