Three police officers and a local have been detained at a police station in Kitangela after being found with five elephant tusks, two firearms, and 30 rounds of ammunition.
OCPD Chief Kingela Patrick Manyasi confirmed the incident, saying officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) apprehended the four at a roadblock near Kitengela.
KWS police had followed the accused from Eldoret till their spectacular arrest in Kitengela. The arrest was made on a tip-off.
When apprehended, the suspects drove an old Subaru with the registration number KAZ 604. The perpetrators are claimed to have pulled their handguns during their arrest, which witnesses compared to a movie.
The suspects have been identified as Richard Kipleting, a police constable; Philip Lupanga, a policeman who works as a chauffeur for Judiciary Milimani; Ben Kiplang'at Koskei, a prominent politician based in Eldoret; and Charles Nzuki, a civilian.
The five tusks are believed to weigh 29 kilograms and be valued at Ksh. 2.9 million. The accused were transported to Kitengela Police Station before being transferred to the KSW detention facility in Lang'ata.
