The attorneys for the prosecution handling self-proclaimed preacher Paul Mackenzie's case urged a Mombasa court on Friday to allow the State to keep the suspect and six other co-accused persons for another 90 days to complete investigations.
The prosecution made the plea to Shanzu Law Court Principal Magistrate Yusuf Abdallah Shikanda, claiming that the seven accused would interfere with investigations and endanger themselves if released.
"We will not allow this matter to be resolved through mob justice because the respondents need their day in court and to be handled within compliance with the rules of law and enabling laws," the prosecution stated.
"With the limited resources available for the Shakahola investigation, it may not be possible to provide 24-hour security to all respondents." Keeping them secure in captivity is appropriate."

The authorities also said that if released, there was no guarantee that the accused would stop radicalizing Kenyans with extreme religious ideas.
They also wanted the suspects arrested so that police could conduct identification processes in which suspects in crime are shown to victims and witnesses to see if they can be recognized as the perpetrators of the crimes charged against them.
