Following the capture of a Chinese national suspected of being behind the illicit trafficking of stolen copper material, police probing the rampant spate of vandalism on electrical towers and substations have reached a breakthrough.
On Saturday morning, authorities investigated Jinxin Commercial Ltd, a scrap metal go-down in Athi River. They discovered an assortment of copper and aluminium scrap metals that were thought to have been stolen from recently destroyed power lines and substations.
According to the investigators, the suspect exported 10 tonnes of copper worth Ksh.8 million shillings in the last two weeks.
The commander of the Energy Police Unit, Zachary Mwangi, told Citizen Digital that the suspect and her associates melted the copper wires and aluminium into blocks before transporting them to a container at the Nairobi ICD depot to avoid a police dragnet.
