The cause of death of a 50-year-old man whose body was discovered in the River Kamweti in Gichugu on Thursday night is being looked into by Kirinyaga police.

John Kabengi, who passed away and was from the community of Kariru, is alleged to have vanished on Wednesday, prompting his family to start looking for him.

Families of the dead, led by Stanley Njeru, claim that locals in Mucagara village found the body as they were going to get water near Kamweti Falls.

Moses Bundi, a relative, said, "We were called by women who were fetching water because we had asked residents with information of his whereabouts to inform us."

Faith Wairimu continued, "We have been up all night searching in vain for our brother in Gichugu."

Gichugu sub-county DCI Millicent Ochuka acknowledged the occurrence and stated that the police are investigating the death's cause.

"An investigation has been started. The family will let us know if he was ill, but we don't know right now," Ochuka added.

The deceased's body was found and transported to Kibugi Funeral Home in Kutus for a postmortem.
