Nancy Kigunzu, alias Mathe wa Ngara, has requested that the JKIA law court release her on bail since she is ill and needs medication.

She collapsed during the bail hearing on Monday and later told the court that her medical condition requires daily monitoring and medicine and that she is worried that if she is granted bail, her condition may worsen.

Kigunzu denied charges that she is a flight risk and will flee court proceedings when she appeared before Magistrate Njeri Thuku.

Kigunzu's lawyer, Danstan Omari, stated that while she was arrested in Nairobi CBD, her children were taken in a residential area, contending that she has a home and the police knew about it.

She also denied rumors that she would interfere with witnesses in the case, claiming that all of the witnesses are police officers and that she has no authority.

Kigunzu's co-accused, Teresia Wanjiru, and two others were also in court and asked to be released on bond.

Through their lawyers, the accused claim that the prosecution has not demonstrated compelling reasons to keep them in custody.

The prosecution had requested the court not to release the four on bail to prevent them from poisoning society.

"The accused persons be isolated from society so they do not continue poisoning the society in which they live in," reads the prosecution’s affidavit.

Stephen Chesire, who is researching the case against the accused, claims that if they are released, they will flee the country, adding that they are a flight risk and their whereabouts are unknown.

The prosecution also claims that they intend to interrogate and document key witnesses, which could lead to additional arrests of the conspirators.
