Armed bandits killed a university student and a National Police Reservist in the Kiriamet district of Baringo County.

After nearly six months of relative peace, the 7 p.m. killings rekindled embers in the area, even as Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki maintained his former claim that he would permanently abolish banditry in the country.

The student, a third-year Kibabii University student on vacation at home, had sought the NPR officer's companionship as he proceeded into the bush to pick honey.

The two were assaulted by armed bandits, and the student died on the scene, while the overpowered reservist died en route to the hospital.

With tensions high, the leaders are urging security officers in the area to tighten their grip even more than they have in the previous six months.

CS Kindiki commissioned an Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) camp in Mulango Area in Isiolo County, where he claimed the contingent deployed was armed with the newest equipment to battle banditry day and night.

Kindiki swore to stop banditry in the country while assuring the various groups residing in the area that the commissioned camp was permanent.

Kindiki also urged officers in Isiolo and around the country to engage in decisive action if they were confronted by bandits.

Several settlements can be found in the volatile Isiolo North sub-county of Mulango. Natural springs that offer feed for animals draw pastoralists from all over, rendering the area vulnerable to bandits.
