Jalang'o claims that because content producers frequently brag about their fortune on social media, they have no excuse for avoiding paying taxes.
He asserts that the vast majority of them make millionaire claims. Jalang'o stated that the 15% tax idea was motivated by content creators on his YouTube channel on Friday.
The Finance Bill 2023 contains a proposal to levy a 15% withholding tax on the commercialization of digital content.
"How do I persuade the government or people who don't understand content creation that content creators don't have money and are unable to pay the 15% tax when you show out there that you are millionaires?" he asked.
Jalang'o, who also makes content, claimed that coworkers have asked him to speak with the government to have the proposal dropped.
He said that it was challenging for him to address the panel from the front and explain that content providers are unable to pay taxes.
The lawmaker continued by saying that since the government will make sure the measure is passed, content creators should come up with a counterproposal outlining how much they are willing to pay.
