A multi-agency team will be constituted on Monday to re-test 33 containers consignment of sugar nabbed at the Port of Mombasa as investigations continue.
The team comprising officials from the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KeBS), Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), and Kenya Ports Authority will verify the consignment, which has been seized and are currently under the custody of KRA.
The team is expected to report on whether the sugar is contaminated or not.
Should the team find that the sugar is contaminated, the owner will be given a 30-day notice to re-ship the consignment back to the country of origin, failure to which they will have the power to order its destruction.
According to the official importer, Rehema Badi, out of the 46 containers imported at a cost of Kes 214 million, only 13 were contaminated, and the remaining 33 containers are safe.
