Human rights activists have raised concern over the number of unclaimed bodies from the shakahola religious cult that are currently at the Malindi sub-county hospital mortuary.

The group notes that there are 430 bodies uncollected in the mortuary.

Human rights advocates in the coastal region have voiced worry over the quantity of remains being stored at the Malindi sub-county hospital mortuary.

This occurred during the fifth round of exhumation, during which 17 additional dead were recovered from the Shakahola jungle.

There are now 446 bodies at the institution. Only eight remains were returned to the families after DNA tests identified the victims' family members.

Campaigners led by Mathias Shipeta of Haki Afrika say that locals are concerned about their health because there are so many bodies and limited storage space.

Victor Kaudo, a human rights campaigner, has requested that the authorities halt the exhumation and update the findings of more than 600 DNA samples collected over a year ago. Only 30 results were provided.
