President William Ruto has launched the LPG Initiative for Public Schools, a program to shift schools from biomass-based fuels to clean, sustainable, and safe cooking energy.
The launch event at Jamhuri High School highlights the government’s commitment to reducing environmental degradation and promoting cleaner energy adoption.
President Ruto underscored the urgent need to combat deforestation, pollution, and environmental damage caused by traditional cooking fuels like firewood.
He pointed out that the high demand for biomass significantly hampers reforestation efforts. “By cutting reliance on biomass and prioritizing tree planting, we will increase forest cover and secure a sustainable future for generations,” he stated.

The initiative aligns with the government’s goal to boost LPG consumption from 6.5 kg to 15 kg per capita by 2028, achieving 70% market penetration. A pilot phase will commence with 20 institutions before expanding nationwide to all boarding schools within a year.
President Ruto highlighted both the economic and health benefits of adopting LPG in schools. He explained that transitioning to cleaner energy will improve students' learning conditions, support job creation, and attract more investments into the LPG sector.
The government is collaborating with the private sector to improve LPG imports, lower prices, and expand storage infrastructure to enhance affordability. “By zero-rating LPG taxes and improving logistics, we are ensuring affordable access, particularly for low-income households,” he said.
The government will roll out a national campaign to raise awareness about LPG safety and benefits, encouraging adoption at both institutional and household levels.
President Ruto emphasized that this transition will help lower the cost of living, boost food security, and foster economic growth.
“This initiative marks the beginning of a cleaner, safer learning environment while driving environmental conservation efforts,” he concluded.
