Kisii Governor Simba Arati has refuted allegations that he fired 740 county employees for failing to show up for a headcount he ordered soon after taking office in November.

Arati claimed in a press release addressed to newsrooms that the show cause letter to the workers, as mentioned above, requested them to justify their absence during the personnel audit exercise at Gusii stadium.

According to the county manager, the affected employees' answers to their department heads will determine whether or not their salaries will be halted after 21 days.

On Wednesday afternoon, a letter from the county secretary's office directed the human resource department to stop remitting salaries to 740 employees, causing massive turbulence among county employees, as some of the affected employees claimed they were on the "death" list despite being physically present during the audit exercise.

The health department was the most affected, with over 395 personnel, including consultants, medical physicians, and clinical officers, scheduled to explain their absence from November 15 to December 15, when the staff audit was conducted.

Simba Arati insists that no one will penetrate the county's cookie jar to combat corruption and irregular payment of ghost labor.
