A group of members of the Kisii County Assembly issued a call on Tuesday for government intervention, citing concerns over the safety of Governor Simba Arati.
Led by Bomorenda MCA John Ombati, the assembly members asserted that there was a perceived plot by certain individuals to harm the Kisii county governor.
Their statements come in response to the circulation of an audio clip on social media purportedly detailing a plan to have Arati arrested.
Ombati mentioned that they are considering organizing a countywide mass demonstration to express their grievances against the government.
"We want to know what is this that they want from him," he said in the assembly.
Governor Arati has now provided a statement to the Directorate of Criminal Intelligence in Nairobi regarding the purported arrest threats associated with a Kisii-based officer.
While speaking in the assembly on Tuesday, the Ward Reps accused "cartels" of sponsoring the governor's harrasssment for purposes of "derailing him from undertaking development for his people."
They tabled a motion Tuesday evening through Majority Leader Henry Moracha to censure an officer they claimed is heard on the audio recording issueing the arrest threats.
"As the assembly, we are waiting to hear from her or someone from the national government to explain about the unfortunate utterances as made in the audio clip.
"If we shall not receive any satisfactory response, we shall call our people to mass action on the streets in the coming weeks," Moracha said.
He told the House that Arati was currently discharging his responsibilities under difficult circumstances.
"He has been for a while now been operating under difficult environment full of harrasssment,"he said.
Moracha emphasized that all threats to the governor must be promptly addressed, as they pose a serious risk to his life.
Bogeka MCA Richmond Manani urged the officer allegedly involved in the audio clip to refrain from engaging in politics.
"Otherwise, we want her moved," Manani said during a press conference outside the Kisii Assembly.
"The governor is already working and everything is going on well, they should stop fighting the governor through the back door," Manani said.
