Police killed a man by shooting on Friday in Kimana area, Kajiado County, after he allegedly clobbered two people to death with a hammer.
Confirming the incident, Loitokitok Police Commander David Kabuthia said the assaillant had attacked the police before trying to escape using a police vehicle that had arrived at the scene.
The assailant identified as Mwangi is estimated to have been 22 years of age and is said to have trespassed the homestead of 99-year-old Stanley Ngige Kimani who would be his victim and attempted to steal a car.
Children who were in the compound raised the alarm alerting the owner.
“When the grandfather came out of the house and intervened. The accused now the deceased by the name Maina confronted this old man with an iron bar, clobbered him on the head killing him instantly,” Kibuthia said.
A neighbor who lived nearby heard the disturbance and hurried to assist the old man.
He attempted to flee after realizing his attacker was carrying the rudimentary weapon, but he was fatally struck with a blow to the head.
After that, Mwangi headed toward the Kimana area and attacked a tuktuk driver.
“He met a tuktuk registration KTW 191D which was ridden by one Simon Kihara. He stopped the said tuktuk and again clobbered the cyclist Simon Kihara occasioning him to serious injuries on the forehead. This Simon Kihara ran away and went to the police station and made a report,” Kibuthia said.
The police caught up with Mwangi who was walking along the road side with the weapon.
“They challenged him to stop but he furiously attacked the police office damaging the vehicle GKB 301T Toyota landcruiser. Police officers tried to arrest him but with the use of the said iron bar he resisted arrest and aimed at the driver. Fortunately, the driver was only injured.”
Following his attacks, the police shot him dead.
