Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has officially signaled his intention to run for president in the 2027 general elections, promising transformative leadership and a fresh era of accountability in Kenya.

Speaking to Kenyans living in the United States on Monday, Dr. Matiang’i criticized the Kenya Kwanza administration for what he termed as misplaced priorities and failure to address critical national issues. He emphasized the need for visionary leadership that includes the Kenyan diaspora in shaping the country's future.

“We must stop finger-pointing and focus on progress. The stars are ahead we must reach for them. I will not make excuses. I will take responsibility and accept full accountability,” Matiang’i declared.

In what is his clearest indication yet of a presidential run, Matiang’i stressed that true leadership requires courage, vision, and responsibility, qualities he says he is ready to embody.

Addressing Kenya's current economic and political difficulties, Dr. Matiang’i reassured his audience that these challenges are temporary and solvable with unity and sound governance.

“You don’t understand the real weight of leadership until you’re the one making decisions for millions. This isn’t child’s play. Running a country is serious business,” he stated.

He pledged to harness Kenya’s available resources and collective potential to steer the nation forward, underlining that effective leadership must be inclusive and people-driven.

Highlighting one of his key priorities, Matiang’i expressed concern over reduced funding for public education and the growing instability in educational policy.

He emphasized the need for policy consistency in the education sector, noting the increased stress among teachers and school administrators as a result of unstable funding.

Dr. Matiang’i urged the diaspora to take a more active role in Kenya’s development, affirming their voice as vital in national decision-making.
