Over 16 people have been injured after a car rammed into supporters of Liberian president-elect Joseph Boakai, who were celebrating his win.

Police stated they were looking for more victims in hospitals, while Boakai's Unity Party said at least ten people were killed in the incident.

"I can't confirm the total number (of casualties), but at JFK, I know there are 16 persons, 12 males and four females," said police spokesman Melvin

According to Boakai's party, at least ten persons were murdered when a car crashed into a crowd of supporters outside their offices at 9 p.m. (2100 GMT).

"It just picked up speed and ran into the supporters, and about ten people are dead as we speak," party spokesman Mohammed Ali told AFP.

Social media videos showed bloodied people laying on the ground, some receiving medical attention.

On Monday, Boakai was declared the winner of last week's election, with 50.64 percent of the vote over incumbent George Weah's 49.36 percent.

In a country plagued by coups, the outgoing president and former football star earned international acclaim by yielding and advocating a nonviolent transition.
