Two people were killed on Wednesday after a fire exchange ensued when detectives were trailing the assailants who killed a police officer escorting the KCSE exam on Monday in the Awinga area in Alego Usonga, Siaya County.

According to police, firearms were recovered and the assailants are believed to be returnees from Somalia as copies of the Quran and prayer mats were recovered from their hideout.

The dead was ambushed by attackers using rudimentary weapons on Monday morning while accompanied by his colleague and the center management.

Eyewitnesses reported that the cops had just got off a school bus that had taken them to pick up the exam papers from Siaya County headquarters.

 However, the bus could not get to the school because of poor road conditions, so the officers got off a few meters away.

The thugs wounded one cop and killed another while the center manager ran for cover. The cops' guns were taken by the criminals, who then fled.

Security personnel rushed to the scene and took the injured officer to Siaya County Referral Hospital for treatment. The body of the deceased was taken to the hospital’s mortuary.

Siaya County Commissioner Julius Otieno and the County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo who led the security team that visited the scene and picked the injured officer to Siaya County referral hospital where he is undergoing treatment.
