Residents of the Kariminu II Dam in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, will be compensated Ksh.150 million for losses incurred due to the dam overflowing.

Locals whose properties, including land and homes, are on the verge of being inundated by the already full mega project will be paid and moved, according to Water Cabinet Secretary Zachary Njeru.

The government has begun compensating and relocating Iruri, Kiriko, Gathanji, and Kanyoni village residents to safer places. The value of the residents' properties is being accelerated to expedite the process.

According to the Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA), the dam started overflowing due to heavy rainfall.

"The spillway design has flood control, and drainage works provide safety to downstream areas against failure by overtopping during the El Nino rains," the State corporation said in a statement posted on X.
