According to a Reuters reporter, gunfire broke out in Guinea-Bissau's capital, Bissau, during the night and into Friday morning.

Uncertainty surrounds the shooting's circumstances.

Since Guinea-Bissau gained its independence from Portugal in 1974, there have been at least ten attempted coups. In West Africa, south of Senegal, only one democratically elected president has served a full term in office.

An unsuccessful attempt to remove President Umaro Sissoco Embalo occurred in February of last year, resulting in the deaths of at least six people.
