The government has confirmed the death of six people in the last 24 hours attributed to the ongoing floods across the country bringing the death toll to 142.
In a statement by government spokesman Isaac Mwaura, the fatalities occurred in Tana River, Taita Taveta, Machakos, and Kisumu.
Mwaura pointed out that Turkana has been added to the list of counties on high alert due to the “intensifying floods.”
“The escalation of the floods has led to the establishment of five additional camps to accommodate the growing number of displaced individuals.”
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has further revealed that the State Department of Public Health will receive cholera kits from the World Health Organisation, donated to 17 flood-affected counties.

The kits are ready for distribution; they were shipped from the WHO regional office to the Kenya Red Cross storage.
“The Cholera kits donated to the state Department of Public Health by the World Health Organization (WHO) are being dispatched from the WHO region hub to the Kenya Red Cross warehouse for the last mile of distribution to 17 counties,” he said.
On Saturday, mosquito nets will also be distributed to Isiolo County.
He did, however, add that cases of diarrhea recorded in Kwale, Mandera, Lamu, Garissa, and Wajir are being treated.
Pneumonic disease outbreaks in livestock have been documented, resulting in the deaths of 72 chickens, 12 cattle, 1680 goats, 728 sheep, and one camel, bringing the total number of animal deaths to 2493.
“The floods have also affected livestock and agriculture, with acreage of farmlands submerged, and an outbreak of pneumonic cattle disease, 72 poultry, 12 cattle, 1680 goats, 728 sheep, and 1 camel have died.”
