NPS officers from the Wema General Service Unit (GSU) camp in Tana Delta Sub County were rescued after their camp was submerged in flood waters.

According to the NPS, the rescue operation was conducted on Saturday, December 2, after the Kenya Coast Guard Service dispatched men to bulk evacuate the officers who had been stuck until the Coast Guard's assistance.

"National Police Service Officers from Wema GSU Camp in Tana Delta Sub County were successfully evacuated on Dec 2, 2023 with assistance from Kenya Coast Guard Services' boats after their camp was totally submerged by the ongoing flood situation which has greatly affected the Coastal Region," the commission's report said.

The Kenya Coast Guard was called in to assist officers who tried to navigate the flooded waters on Saturday evening but could not reach higher ground.

"Last night, the GSU Officers navigated the rising waters to higher ground." "The National Police Service commends the GSU Officers, and indeed all NPS Officers wherever they serve our country, for their true reflection of resilience and great desire to serve our country," the NPS said.

The rescue crew was also able to recover weapons and other police equipment. The current floods have displaced around 472,000 people across the country.
