A funeral ceremony in Kioomooncha, Marani Sub County Kisii County, was marred by drama as local grave diggers refused to dig the deceased's grave.

This compelled visitors to dig the grave so that the event might conclude peacefully. Other villagers supported the decision of the village grave diggers, accusing the deceased's relatives of failing to attend other people's funerals, Harambee, and other village activities and only showing up when it was their loved one who had died.

“Nowadays, it is tit for tat, if you do not attend other people’s funerals, nobody will participate in yours either,” a villager said

Those who spoke during the burial asked those living in Nairobi and other cities to participate in rural activities, both physically and financially.

"There are some people who have disappeared in Nairobi and other towns and they think that we will just support them when they or their relatives die," Joyce Siro, an elder in the village, told reporters.

Such people will be left on their own when such a time arrives." she added

In another case, when his mother died, a man from the same town who works and lives in Nairobi was left alone.
