Following a heavy traffic jam on Tuesday, hundreds of motorists and passengers are said to have spent the night on Mombasa road. 

According to police reports, the heavy traffic on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway between Manyani and Mtito Andei was caused by a truck overturning and blocking the road.

Images shared on social media showed passengers sitting by the roadside while the carnage remained static.

Eyewitnesses told Waza News there had been no movement since 1 a.m. they advised other road users to avoid the route.


"Update on traffic between Mtitu Andei and Voi." There has been no movement since 1 a.m. "If you're going to Mombasa from Nairobi or vice versa, plan accordingly," a user wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

According to reports, the 10-hour snarl-up covered several kilometers in Makueni and Taita Taveta counties.

According to the police, efforts are being made to control the situation.
