A family in Kirinyaga County's Gichonjo village is mourning the death of their 17-year-old son, who drowned while swimming.
Jeshit Murimi, the son, perished while swimming in the flooded Nyamindi River. Gichonjo sub-location Assistant Chief Patrick Waweru confirmed the incident.
Waweru said: “The Form Three student drowned on Wednesday evening around 5pm while swimming in the river alone.”
When the incident happened, he had been camping near the river in the company of his twin brother and a few friends.

“The boy was a student at the Difathas secondary school in Mwea-east Sub-county, and was due to join Form Four next week when the schools reopen,” said Chief Waweru.
The family and village neighbors stayed beside the river while divers combed the waters for the body long into the night.
The twin sibling claimed he attempted in vain to assist his brother.
"I did everything I could to assist my brother, encouraging him not to panic, but he drowned." "That's when I raised the alarm," the twin brother explained.
Jane Wanjira, the aunt, spoke about the incident, saying it had left the family heartbroken.
"My sister, the mother, is still camping on the riverbank, hoping and praying that he will be found." "She spent the night here at the river," Wanjira explained.
