Police in Bondo have arrested a middle-aged man for allegedly murdering his girlfriend and dumping her body in a gold mining pit in the Nango area.

The suspect, Edwin Omondi Ochieng’ was alleged to have been behind the disappearance of Maurine Achieng’, who had not been seen since January 1, 2024.

The incident was reported to the Kopolo Police Station on Thursday. After the man was taken into custody and questioned, he admitted to killing Maurine on January 3, 2024, in his residence.

According to preliminary investigations, Edwin killed his girlfriend after suspecting her of cheating, and he disposed of her body in a 9-foot-deep gold mining pit that he filled with dirt and iron sheets.

Before going to the suspect's home, the accused and the deceased were last seen on January 1, 2024, during a drinking binge at the Ghorofani pub in Nango Trading Centre.

Following his confession to the murder, the man led the cops to the pit where, under the Bondo Law Courts' order, the deceased's body was excavated in front of the county security team and public health department employees.

A wheelbarrow that was retrieved from the scene and kept as an exhibit is thought to have been used to transport the body.

Additionally discovered in the accused person's home are a blood-stained yellow T-shirt and a pair of white trousers, all of which will undergo forensic examination.

Since then, the deceased's decayed body has been brought to the mortuary of the Bondo sub-county hospital in anticipation of an autopsy.

The suspect has been remanded for 14 days at Bondo Police Station to give room for completion of investigations and mental assessment.
