One person was killed while another sustained serious injuries following a United Nations cargo aircraft accident at Elberde town in Somalia.

The aircraft model Skyward Fokker 50 Tail (5Y- JWG), contracted by the UN’s' World Food Program (WFP), allegedly overrun the 1000-metre runway and crashed into a building in the town centre.

Only four people were reportedly onboard, and two have since been confirmed safe.

Confirming the accident in a statement, the Somali Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) said a probe is underway to establish the cause.

"The Somali Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) wishes to confirm that an aircraft type Fokker 50 (F50) Cargo operated by Jetways, crash-landed on the runway at Ceel Bar& Airport today 18 January 2024 at 11:30 am local time," read a statement.

"The aircraft had a total of 4 crew on board, there is one death, one serious injury from the accident."

On the other hand, the United Nations, in a statement, said the crash, saying that the aircraft was transporting humanitarian supplies for the World Food Program when it veered off the runway.

"The United Nations in Somalia expresses its condolences to the family and colleagues of the victim and wishes a speedy recovery for the injured," read part of the statement.

Further, the Un said it is working with the contracted airline company and federal and South West State Authorities to investigate the incident.
