A police officer was killed on Thursday after an explosive hidden in a donkey cart exploded in Mandera.

Police say two other officers were injured during the incident as two donkeys were crossing with luggage from Somalia side with a guide.

Security agents manning the border had stopped donkey cart for a routine inspection for contraband items when the bomb went off.

However, the donkeys survived the explosion.

It is thought that suspected members of the terrorist group Al-Shabaab, which is associated with Al-Qaeda, may have remotely detonated the explosives.

One of the northern counties that has been hardest hit by terrorist assaults is Mandera, which borders Somalia.

Other counties that have come under Al-Shabaab attacks including the neighboring Garissa and Wajir Counties.
