Payments for meals purchased from the university kitchens by University of Nairobi employees and students must now be made via the e-Citizen app.
This complies with the Kenya Kwanza government's directive to the University to make all payments to the organization via the government website.
The University sent out a memo to all staff members and students a week ago outlining the procedures and guidelines for making the payments.
"The Kenyan Government has mandated that all payments to the University of Nairobi be made via the E-Citizen platform. Complying with this directive, the University has established the required systems to enable clients to make payments through E-Citizen. To pay for services, please follow the instructions provided below," reads the memo seen by Citizen Digital, issued by the VC through the corporate affairs office.

The user was instructed to enter the Outlet/Live identifier in capital letters, followed by a hyphen and name (e.g., NUK1-name) as the account number, and then make the payment using pay bill number 222222.
The University continued by providing additional payment information (Outlet/Live Identifiers) for various kitchens.
The directive applies to various Nairobi satellite campuses and the main campus's kitchens.
The most recent orders were issued a month after the government finished migrating all of its services to the e-Citizen platform, where users must pay a fee to access government services.
The government announced the introduction of access fees for government services on the e-Citizen platform in December 2023 through Treasury and Economic Planning Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung'u.
Ndung'u announced in a gazette notice that users wishing to utilize the platform's services would have to pay a small transactional administrative fee.
