A Form Three student drowned on Thursday during a swimming excursion that was scheduled for prefects and high-achieving students from Karia Secondary School in Kirinyaga County. The event turned tragic.

The school had transported 17 students, including the deceased Eric Muconge, to a nearby hotel for the excursion.

John Torori, the Central Sub-County Police Commander, confirmed the incident to Citizen Digital, stating that the drowning happened at approximately 4 p.m.

First responders immediately took the high school student to a nearby hospital for medical attention, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

''I could not believe Eric was no more as I was told the school management took the best performers and prefects to the hotel. Eric was a Form Three perfect," the deceased's mother, Hannah Wanjiru Muconge, told Citizen Digital.

Since then, the deceased's family has questioned how the entire incident happened.

"We want to know what happened because we were shocked to see the lifeless body of Eric in a local private hospital, though we expected his body at Kerugoya Hospital. We want to know why detectives have been told to meet at Kerugoya Police Station," said Paul Wanyoike, Muconge's uncle.

While inquiries into the reported drowning are ongoing, the deceased's body has since been transferred to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital and is awaiting a post-mortem.

"We have launched investigations, and we are telling the family to remain calm, and anybody found guilty will be prosecuted," Torori said.
