A probe has been launched after a Form Four student at St. Charles Lwanga Secondary School in Lugari, Kakamega County, died after participating in a school marathon.

Timothy Akila, aged 20, died while receiving treatment at Chekalini Hospital after collapsing and being transported there.

Akila fell while participating in a school marathon race at Chekalini Secondary School.

Fred Amugunya, the father of the deceased child, said that he spoke with his son on that fatal morning before he departed for school.

"I spoke to him in the morning, and he told me he was going for the school games. I left to run my errands as he went for the games,” said Amugunya.

Later, he received a call informing him that his son had died and that he needed to rush home.

“I don’t know what really happened,” said a distraught Amugunya.

The family has asked the authorities to investigate the event.

Area Chief Julius Mpapale asked parents and teachers to be aware of their children's health situation, particularly those participating in sports, to avoid such happenings.
