Three miners on Thursday died while on a mining expedition after the walls of an underground gold mine collapsed in Manyatta Village, Vihiga County.

The three were among five people who were mining in the area.

Manyatta residents say two people were pulled out of the rubble alive and are currently recuperating at the Vihiga County Referral Hospital.

Among the dead is a 38-year-old man identified as Patrick Eseli.

Confirming the incident, Vihiga County Commissioner Felix Watakila has called on the community to observe safety regulations.

Further, he said that the County government will will launch a crackdown on all unlicensed mining activities.
