The county assembly of Kisii has impeached County Deputy Governor Robert Monda after a majority of MCAs okayed the motion.

One MCA refrained from voting, and 13 others opposed his expulsion. Monda has been accused of accepting a bribe to help a resident secure a job with the GWASCO Water Company.

He was also charged with abuse of office, which he rejected at his appearance before the county on Thursday morning.

Monda distanced himself from corruption allegations last week, telling the media that an impeachment process before the Kisii County Assembly would fail.

"I have never been accused of corruption in my life. It is only this time that it is coming in my history. I have sufficient answers and it is the responsibility of the holders of this motion to ensure they have a case to prosecute,” said the Monda.

According to the 2010 constitution, A Deputy Governor may be removed if he or she violates the Constitution or any other legislation, commits a crime under national or international law, abuses their position, or engages in serious misconduct.

According to the law, once the impeachment resolution has passed in the county assembly, the county assembly speaker must notify the Senate speaker in writing within two days.

The position will become vacant if the Senate supports the assembly's decision to impeach the deputy governor. When this happens, the county governor must propose a new deputy within 14 days.
