More than a hundred alcohol businesses in Nyeri County have been closed as the government intensifies its fight against illicit brew.
During the annual Nyeri breakfast event, attended by First Lady Rachel Ruto and Second Lady Dorcas Rigathi, Nyeri County Commissioner Pius Murugu stated that the directive has been implemented in establishments surrounding schools.
“Since last year we have cleared 85% of such outlets. The last three days we have closed over 100 illicit brew establishments that are around learning institutions. We are also dealing with illegal chemists and agrovets dispensing illegal drugs,” Murugu said.

During the induction service for Rev. David Chege of PCEA Gateway Parish in Roysambu, Nairobi County, the DP said he has faced several challenges in his fight against illicit brew.
The second in command vowed to continue committing to eliminating the sale of illicit brew, which he claims undermines the social fabric of many Kenyan cultures.
"We are almost losing an entire generation. Nobody will be allowed to sell poison in the name of alcohol to our young people," he said.
"I was not born in the Deputy President position I just recently got it all those other years, I was living a normal life eating and drinking. It is not a must I stay there forever," he added.
Gachagua and President William Ruto stated that the government will not back down from fighting the sale of illicit spirits and will only rest until the problem is eradicated.
