Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, the Deputy President's spouse, has voiced concerns about the rise in tobacco use in Laikipia County.

In Laikipia County, Pastor Dorcas stated that many tobacco users are at risk during her speech at the opening of a two-day medical camp in Rumuruti Stadium.

Here in Laikipia, 2% of women smoke, compared to 1% in Kenya. In Kenya, 13% of men smoke; in Laikipia, 17% smoke.

We are requesting that changes be made so that tobacco use does not cause a population decline because, as you can see, cancer is beginning to claim the lives of our men and women. She said.

The community at large, as well as the boy-child addicted to drugs, alcohol, or substance abuse, are the target audience for the two-day free medical camp.

Governor Joshua Irungu of Laikipia committed to guaranteeing that the county government would provide employment opportunities for the men and boys who successfully completed the rehabilitation program. County MP Jane Kagiri agreed.

Pastor Dorcas also expressed concern about the number of teenage pregnancies in Laikipia County.

"About 9% of our girls aged between 15 and 19 have had cases of teenage pregnancies here, and therefore the statistics indicate that we need to address this matter because it is getting out of hand. We have built a maternity facility but that facility should be for our teens. "She said.

A new maternity wing was inaugurated at the Nyahururu Referral Hospital in Laikipia County last week by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to help the mother have good maternal care.
