Joseph Irungu alias Jowie has filed a notice of appeal against a High Court ruling that sentenced him to death for the 2018 murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani.
In the notice filed by his lawyer, Andrew Muge, Jowie intends to challenge his conviction for the murder and subsequent sentencing by Lady Justice Grace Nzioka.
"Take notice that Joseph Kuria Irungu alias Jowie appeals to the Court of Appeal against the decisions of the Honourable Lady Justice Grace Nzioka delivered in open court at Milimani, Nairobi on the 9th day February 2024 and in her written judgment dated 9th February 2024 whereby the Appellant was convicted of Murder and sentenced to death on 13th March 2024."

The High Court judge, Lady Justice Grace Nzioka, handed Jowie the sentence after he was found guilty of the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani.

While delivering the sentence, Justice Esther Nzioka indicated that the nature of the killing warranted the highest penalty.
She stated that Jowie was ineligible for rehabilitation as the crime was beyond restitution.
"Having considered the evidence in this matter it is the finding of this court that the prosecution has adduced adequate evidence and has met the threshold.... It is the finding of this court that the first accused person murdered the deceased," ruled Justice Grace Nzioka.
Kimani met a tragic end in 2018 when she was discovered dead at her residence in Lamuria Gardens Apartment, situated on Kitale Lane off Denis Pritt Road in Kilimani.
