Kirinyaga traders have accused some Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) employees of harassing them and taking bribes on their premises as the battle against illicit brew continues.

Angry traders from Kagio, Kutus, and Kandongu urge the Ministry of Interior to investigate whether certain KEBS officials are working with police officers to harass and collect money.

"On Thursday they collected over Ksh.1 million in cash at Kiamaciri Police Station from us after arresting us in our premises yet nobody was taken to court," a shopkeeper who was upset stated.

Angry neighbors in Kutus, Gichugu, said they were transferred to Kutus Police Station after being arrested and that KEBS personnel were merely negotiating for money after invading their store.

"I was forced to part away with Ksh.100,000 when they insisted that when I'm taken to court I will be fined over Ksh.1 million," said a dealer from Kutus.

On Monday in the Kagio area, Kirinyaga County Commissioner Hussein Alasow Hussein cautioned the public against giving money to any government servant.

After receiving complaints from locals that several well-known beers are not authentic, the county commissioner stated that he is working with his security team to verify that beer distributors sell the correct brand.
