Two miners lost their lives on Thursday after rock debris fell on them while inside a gold mine in the Akala area, Nyatike, in Migori county.

Confirming the accident, Migori County artisanal miner’s Association chairperson Kephas Ojuka revealed that four other people sustained injuries in the accident – and had to be rushed to hospital.

“The two miners died on the spot, while four were injured and had to be rushed to Migori referral hospital for treatment. One of the four miners sustained serious injuries while three had minor injuries,” said Ojuka.

Further, Ojuka said miners were prospecting gold when the rock debris fell off from the wall of the mine, killing two and injuring four.

Reports indicate that engineers inspected the killer mine before the miners began prospecting gold a few hours before the incident.

Investigations have begun to find out what may have caused the accident.
