Rashid Echesa, the former secretary of the Sports Cabinet, was detained over the weekend on suspicion of extorting Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa.

Police refused to release Echesa on bond, so he was arrested on Thursday afternoon and is being held at the Muthaiga Police Station. He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.

Echesa is in police custody for allegedly engaging in extortion, cybercrime bullying, and stage-managing an abduction, according to his attorney Danstan Omari.

The former CS was also brought to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Kiambu Road, where he was interrogated for hours. The former CS is currently the Chairman of the Kenya Water Towers Agency (KWTA).

According to the officers, Echesa has been dodging arrest and interrogation attempts regarding the allegations and potential legal action.
