In Siaya County's Alego-Usonga sub-county, a gold mine collapsed, leaving five additional miners injured and two women dead.

The mine shaft fell on Saturday night, burying Maureen Anyango, 28, and Beryl Atieno, 40, alive.

Four more miners were discovered to be trapped in the rubble. However, they were still alive, according to Siaya County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo, who stated that officers who came to the scene verified this information.

While their other coworkers, Owaga and Consolata Ooko, were rescued by members of the public and sent to a Siaya County referral hospital for treatment, Anyango and Atieno passed away immediately.

The head of police continued by saying that Grace Akinyi, 29, Moses Omondi, and George Odhiambo all made it out alive.

Before the two miners' bodies were sent to the mortuary of the Siaya County referral hospital to await a postmortem, the situation was examined and recorded.

The owner of the mining site, Joseph Okoth, has been detained and is currently being held at the Kogelo police station, where he is assisting with investigations.
