One person has died while two others have sustained serious injuries after a car they were traveling in lost control and plunged into a river at Sabwani bridge, along the Lessons-Namanjala road in Trans Nzoia.

According to witnesses, two other occupants of the car sustained serious injuries in the accident and had to be rushed to hospital by Good Samaritans.

Further, they revealed that the car, which appeared to have been speeding, lost control and plunged into the raging river just at the bridge point.

Speaking about the incident, village elder Susan Naliaka said the accident may have been caused by a bad road.

“I arrived to find the vehicle completely submerged. So, we called the police to the scene immediately we received word about the accident,” said Naliaka.

Additionally, he identified the deceased as Everline Nasimiyu, who was heading to Kitali market to get vegetables for her stall.

Residents now want guardrails erected on the side of the bridge to prevent motorists or pedestrians from falling into the river.

The bodies of the deceased have been taken to Kitale Level 4 Hospital.
