Following Tuesday night's intense rainstorm, more than 20 families and merchants in the Makutano area of Kirinyaga County are tallying their losses.

Due to inadequate water drainage systems from the Mbeere area of Embu County, residents living along the Makutano-Mwea highway were the most negatively impacted.

According to former teacher Rachel Njeri Chege, the powerful water currents destroyed her seven-foot perimeter wall, which was worth over Ksh. 100,000.

"The floods were mixed with human waste and we fear an outbreak of waterborne diseases like cholera," Chege said.

Residents who are furious are blaming the contractor who built the Kenol-Marwa dual carriage for not unblocking culverts, which caused the flooding.

"We have sent several letters to the constructor, Kirinyaga governor, and area MCA even before the rain started," stated Simon Ngure.

Residents claim that because water is being forced into surrounding residential areas by the construction of a flyover in Makutano, they have previously urged Kirinyaga Senator James Kamau to bring up the matter in the Senate.

"We want development. We are not against it but water must be chanelled to the right direction and at the same time we want the contractor from the Chinese company to compensate us," Ngure said.
