The Judicial Service Commission (JSC), a pivotal body in the Kenyan legal system, commenced the crucial task of interviewing candidates for twenty new High Court judges on Monday morning.

Six candidates will compete against the panel headed by Chief Justice Martha Koome. Three of them are Chief Magistrates: Elizabeth Juma, Elizabeth Katiwa, and Emily Ominde.

Of the 100 shortlisted candidates, 31 have been interviewed, and the process is scheduled to end on April 30.

The candidates were rigorously tested on their understanding of the rule of law, the Constitution and its interpretation, and the transformation of judges' roles from traditional to contemporary.

Hiring judges aims to improve case backlog clearance and increase access to justice.

The interviews are available for viewing live at www.judicialkenya.com and www.youtube.com/@jscke.

Currently, 45 stations around the nation are home to 78 judges serving on the Kenyan High Court.
