After less than two years on the job, President William Ruto's deputy aide-de-camp has been replaced.

Bringing a significant change to President William Ruto's team, Colonel Damaris Agnetta Apondi has been relieved of her duties and replaced by Lieutenant Colonel Joan Osweto, according to reliable sources.

Thursday marked Colonel Osweto's first official appearance on the job at Nyeri County's Sagana State Lodge, where President Ruto attended the state concert honoring the winners of the National Drama and Film Festival.

Colonel Fabian Lengusuranga, President Ruto's aide-de-camp, is replaced by her.

Lieutenant Colonel Rachel Nduta, who served under President Uhuru Kenyatta, was replaced by Colonel Apondi, who was appointed in September 2022 following President Ruto's inauguration.

The President appoints an aide-de-camp on his own initiative, and he should be a member of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

Undoubtedly, an aide-de-camp plays a crucial role in the President's operations, often serving as the President's personal assistant or bodyguard.

Their duties include monitoring the President's diary and communicating with the head of their main security detail.

A principal military officer serving as the President's aide-de-camp is a highly skilled senior military officer who is required to be on the President's schedule at all times.

The French phrase "Aide-de-camp" (meaning "assistant in the military camp") is the source of the English term.
