Two Maasai Mara University students drowned while crossing the swollen Enkare Narok River using a log bridge on Thursday morning.

According to eyewitnesses, one of them, a first-year female student, slipped and fell into the raging waters and clung to her colleague, a second-year student in the same institution, and he also fell into the river.

Confirming the incident, Narok County Commissioner, Kipkech Lotiatia said the incident occurred near the Africa hope hall near the university.

“People who watched the incident happen said the girl lost balance, clung on the boy and they both plunged the river.”

Lotiatia observed that Rivers Enkare Narok and Ewaso Ngiro which are close to Maasai Mara University have claimed more than 10 student over the past nine years.

Accompanied by members of Narok Security Committee, the administrator warned students and residents against going near the over flowing river especially during the heavy rains season.

He noted that the rivers in the region were swollen and a threat to human and their livestock.

Lotiatia revealed that several university students have drowned into the two rivers while on picnics along the shores.

He said a third body, was seen floating on River Enkare Narok at about 10:00am.

Lotiatia said police in Narok were working with the university management to gather more details about the two students.
