Two fishermen have drowned in Lake Victoria after engaging in a physical confrontation over a fish breeding zone in Suba North constituency, Homa Bay County.
Confirming the incident, the area chief Charles Ngoe said Enock Opiyo, aged 25, and 40-year-old Dancan Okoth from Uwi Beach drowned on Tuesday evening during a fight with their colleagues from Koginga Beach.
He said trouble began when a group of fishermen from Koginga invaded a fish breeding zone in Uwi, where fishing is not allowed.
Further, he revealed that the five fishermen from Uwi Beach responded with their patrol boat to stop their colleagues already on a fishing expedition at the designated area.
The brawl started when the fishermen from Uwi requested their colleagues to stop casting their nets in the breeding zone, but they declined and continued their activities.
