Two fishermen from Suba North constituency, Homa Bay County, perished in Lake Victoria following a violent altercation over a fish spawning zone in the lake.
Enock Opiyo, 25, and Dancan Okoth, 40, both from Uwi Beach, drowned on Tuesday evening following a brawl with colleagues from Koginga Beach.
According to the local chief, Charles Ngoe, the conflict started when a group of fishermen from Koginga infiltrated a fish breeding zone in Uwi, where fishing is prohibited.
Ngoe stated that five fishermen from Uwi Beach reacted with their patrol boat to halt their colleagues already on a fishing excursion in the approved region.
The dispute began when Uwi fisherman requested that their colleagues cease casting their nets in the breeding zone, but they refused and continued their actions.
During the altercation, the Koginga fisherman attacked their teammates' boat, causing it to topple. Three fishermen were saved, but two died at the scene.
The hunt for the two corpses resumed Wednesday morning.
