Learning will resume today in all public schools countrywide for the second term after two postponements occasioned by flooding.

The reopening is after President William Ruto's directive that all schools must reopen on Monday, May 13, 2024.

This decision was made given better weather forecasts that show less heavy rain, which in the past had forced the postponement of school reopening.

Further, President Ruto has directed that funds be allocated through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) to reconstruct school infrastructure damaged by severe rains.

Due to delays caused by the intense rains, the reopening date of the schools was originally scheduled for April 29, 2024, but was eventually moved to May 6, 2024.

President William Ruto later on Friday last week directed the Ministry of Education to postpone the re-opening of all schools indefinitely following the flooding crisis occasioned by the rains.

Parents have been concerned about the safety of the students amid fears about the status of the learning infrastructure and environment.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu assured that day schools should ensure the safety of learners during collection and dropping by providing clear instructions to school drivers and assigning teachers to supervise.

The CS said that 95 percent of schools are ready to resume for the second term. Still, the situation in some learning institutions in seven counties is being explored to ensure children’s safety.

He said the Ministry, in collaboration with other government agencies, is fixing the damaged school facilities before reopening.
