Residents of Homa Bay Town have expressed concern about the acute water shortage that has plagued the town for a month since Kenya Power and Lightning Company (KPLC) disconnected the power supply at the central water intake due to an electricity bill of Ksh.10 million owed to them by the county government.

The affected estates include Got Rabuor, Shopia, Shauri Yako, Makongeni, and other villages near Homa Bay Town.

Because most Homa Bay residents rely on untreated water from Lake Victoria, the acute water shortage has put their lives in danger of contracting cholera and other waterborne diseases.

Several water vendors operating in Homa Bay Town have profited from residents by doubling the price, as 20 liters of water costs between Ksh.20 and Ksh.30.

Residents want the County government to intervene and settle the bill, claiming that the water they use is unsafe for human consumption.

HOMAWASCO managing Director Tom Nyonje admits there has been a challenge in supplying water to the resident due to outstanding bills, which he says they will resolve this week.
